Innovative Teacher Apprenticeship Program in the US Virgin Islands

In the summer of 2025, Equus partnered with the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Education to launch a groundbreaking K-12 Teacher Apprenticeship Program. This initiative is designed to create a sustainable pipeline of qualified educators while empowering local talent to stay and thrive in their communities.

Over several months, the Equus Intermediary team worked hand-in-hand with key stakeholders, including representatives from the Governor’s Office, the University of the Virgin Islands, the USVI Department of Labor, and the Department of Education. Together, they developed a comprehensive framework for the apprenticeship program, ensuring it aligned with both state and federal standards. Equus led program development and provided technical expertise to transform this vision into reality.

In August, the first cohort of 26 apprentices began their journey toward becoming certified teachers. These individuals represent the future of education in the Virgin Islands—bringing passion, commitment, and a deep connection to their local communities. With expansion already underway, the program is poised to make a lasting impact by addressing teacher shortages and strengthening the quality of education across the territory.
